Self Storage in Barcelona: What a Trastero Really Costs

Between two rentals, during a renovation, or while a villa in Maresme waits for its previous tenants to leave, everyone needs somewhere to put the furniture. Here is what storage in and around Barcelona costs, how the contract works, and the mistakes that cost people a sofa.

Why people in Barcelona rent a box

The most common reason is not a move abroad. It is the gap. Spanish rentals are usually handed over empty or half-empty, viewings happen fast, and the flat you want is free on the 1st while your current lease ends on the 30th. Sometimes the gap is two weeks. Sometimes the landlord needs a month to repaint and change the boiler.

Second reason: space. A 70 m² flat in Gràcia or Poblenou has no trastero, or the trastero is a damp cupboard of four square metres. Skis, bikes, the good chairs from your previous house, files you cannot throw away — all of it has to live somewhere. Villas in Maresme have the opposite problem: a garage full of garden furniture and pool equipment, and no spare room when the family arrives for August.

The sizes and the money

Prices in Barcelona run roughly €25 to €45 per square metre per month, and the small boxes are always the worst value per metre. A one-metre locker in a central facility asks €50 to €75 a month; the same metre in L'Hospitalet, Sant Adrià or the Zona Franca can be €20 to €35. What you are paying for is the address, the lift and the hours, not the cubic metres.

Rough guide to what fits, from operators' own size charts and from what tenants actually tell us:

It is not a rental flat, so the LAU does not apply

A storage unit is a commercial space, not housing. That means no five-year term, no fianza capped at three months, no INCASÒL. What you sign is usually an arrendamiento de espacio or a deposit agreement with its own rules: minimum stay of two weeks to a month, one month's notice to leave, a deposit of one month, and a price that is promotional for the first three months and then rises.

Read the renewal clause. Some operators renew automatically for a year and charge a penalty for leaving early; others are monthly and flexible. If you are storing things for six weeks between flats, the flexible one is worth €15 more per month.

Five things that ruin furniture in Catalan storage

Storage units here are cold in February and 40 °C in July, and many are below street level. Wood, leather and anything with glue does not enjoy either extreme.

The villa case in Maresme

If you rent a villa in Alella, Cabrils or Llavaneres, the storage question usually appears twice: when the previous tenants' things are still in the garage on your move-in day, and when you leave and the landlord wants the house empty for viewings. Agree in the contract who pays for storage if the handover is late. A 20 m² unit in Mataró or El Masnou runs €150 to €250 a month — cheaper than a hotel, but it should not be your invoice.
