Òrrius is the sort of place most people drive past without noticing. It sits a few minutes inland from Cabrils and Vilassar de Dalt, tucked into the hills, and it is one of the smallest municipalities in the Maresme, roughly eight hundred people on the 2025 register. There is no train, no beach and no supermarket worth the name. What there is: a stone village core around the church of Sant Andreu, quiet lanes, houses with gardens, and Barcelona somewhere between thirty-five and fifty minutes away by car depending on the traffic. If you want a village that is genuinely a village, this is one of them. Keep reading, though, because the trade-offs are real.
Òrrius lies inland in the Baix Maresme, in the pocket between Cabrils, Argentona, Vilassar de Dalt and La Roca del Vallès. The wooded hills of the Serralada Litoral rise just behind the village and the coast is a short drive down the valley. The core is tiny: a handful of streets around Plaça de l'Església and the church of Sant Andreu, which started life as a medieval parish and was largely rebuilt in late Gothic style across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Outside that core the municipality is scattered houses, several of them on generous plots, and not much else.
This is the part to be blunt about. Òrrius has no train station of its own and it never will, because no line runs anywhere near it. The nearest R1 stops are down in Vilassar de Mar and Premià de Mar, a ten to fifteen minute drive, and Mataró is roughly the same the other way. Barcelona by car is around thirty-five minutes on a good morning and closer to fifty when the C-31 or the C-32 is having one of its days. Buses exist, but they are thin and aimed at school and market runs rather than a daily commute. Families who live here successfully run two cars and treat the drive as part of the deal, not as an inconvenience to be solved later.
The rental market is small, and most of it is houses. A few flats turn up in the core, usually older and modest, but the bulk of what becomes available is detached or semi-detached homes with gardens, sometimes a pool, on plots you could not buy nearer the coast for the same money. Because supply is so thin, there is no clean published average worth quoting and listings can sit for weeks or move on word of mouth before they ever reach a portal. Prices broadly track the neighbouring hill villages such as Vilassar de Dalt and Cabrils rather than the beach towns, which means you are paying for space and quiet instead of a sea view. If you see something here that fits, move quickly and be ready to prove income, because the owner will have other options.
It is a narrow fit, and it helps to know which side of the line you are on before you fall for a photograph.
There is no international school in Òrrius itself. Families here lean on the Baix Maresme school belt, which from September 2026 includes the BSB Maresme campus in Cabrera de Mar, plus the schools down in Vilassar and Cabrils, so the school run is done by car. For groceries you drive to Vilassar de Mar, Cabrils or Mataró, because the village has little beyond a bar or two. The compensation is that once you are in the car, everything you would normally cram into a coastal town is inside a fifteen minute radius: the beach on a summer evening, the marina at Port Balís, the golf at Llavaneras, and Mataró for anything bigger.
Say it plainly. No train. Few shops. A car needed for nearly every errand, from a loaf of bread to the school gate, and the bus is not a substitute for any of it. Rentals are scarce, so finding the right house can take patience. And when you do, do not expect a beach or a seafront promenade, because there is neither. What you get instead is one of the last genuinely quiet corners of the Baix Maresme, still inside reach of Barcelona. For the right family that is a fair swap. For the wrong one it is a slow lesson in geography.
We are Grandiora, based on the Maresme coast. Much of the village stock around Òrrius and its neighbours never reaches the portals, so it pays to have someone watching for you.
