Granollers does not try to be pretty the way the Maresme coast does. It is a working Catalan city of around 63,000 people, capital of the Vallès Oriental, and one of the few places within easy rail reach of Barcelona where a family can still rent a whole flat for close to the price of a room in the city. If you are weighing a longer commute against real space, it belongs on the list, and you should go in knowing exactly what you are trading away.
The city sits about 25 to 30 km north of Barcelona, in the Vallès Oriental, on the corridor that runs up towards Vic and Girona. It grew on textile money and later on commerce, and today it is the shopping and services hub of the whole comarca, which is why the centre feels busier on a Thursday than a town of its size has any right to. It borders Canovelles, Les Franqueses del Vallès and Montmeló, and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a short drive away in Montmeló.
For a city this far out, the rail is unusually good, because you get a choice. Granollers Centre, right in the middle, is on the R2 and R2 Nord lines and the R8, with direct trains towards Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia and on down the coast in the other direction. Granollers Canovelles, on the eastern edge, is on the R3, which runs into Barcelona Plaça de Catalunya, so if your office is at the top of the city that is the one to take. Count on roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on the line and which end of Barcelona you are heading for. By car the C-17 and the AP-7 do the same trip, with the usual warning that the AP-7 heading into Barcelona at eight in the morning is not fun.
This is where Granollers earns its place on the shortlist. Flat rents have been running around €11.5 to €13 per square metre recently, and houses closer to €10.5 to €11, both well under anything you will find inside Barcelona. In plain terms, a decent two or three bedroom flat with a terrace often lands under €1,000 a month, and that difference is real money you can put into a car, into savings, or into the size of home you actually want. Rooms in shared flats tend to sit somewhere between €450 and €550. Do not expect Maresme villa prices to show up here, because they will not; Granollers is a flat city, and the stock is mostly exactly that.
The centre is built around La Porxada, the sixteenth century grain exchange whose name the locals use for the whole square, and the Thursday market that fills the surrounding streets with more than 400 stalls is a genuine weekly event rather than a token one. Roca Umbert, a converted textile factory, now runs as a public arts and culture space, and the city has a museum and a theatre auditorium of a size you would not expect this far out. A big retail belt on the edge means a normal week rarely needs a trip into Barcelona. Schooling runs from public and concertada up through the private and international options a short drive away in the Vallès.
Granollers is not a postcard. Parts of the centre are plain, the traffic never quite stops, and there is no beach or sea view to lift a grey February afternoon. The Festa Major in late August is loud and local rather than glamorous. If you are used to a beach promenade or a historic quarter with a cathedral, Granollers will feel like an ordinary inland city, because that is exactly what it is. The trade is simple: more home for less money and a fast train into town, in exchange for the coast and the salt air.
It suits families who need three bedrooms and a school run that does not involve the city, commuters whose office sits on the R3 or R2 corridor, and anyone who wants Barcelona as a job rather than as a lifestyle. It suits people less if the whole point of moving to Catalonia was the sea, the marina, or a villa with a pool on the Maresme hills. If that is you, Granollers is the wrong address, and the Maresme towns a few exits down the coast are the right one.
