Arenys de Mar is what people picture when they say they want to live on the Maresme coast, except that it also has real jobs, a real fishing fleet and a train station you can walk to. Around 17,000 people, a working port, three beaches and a hilltop cemetery locals will tell you is the most beautiful in Catalonia. It is also fifty-odd minutes from Barcelona by R1, and that number decides everything.
The R1 drops you in Barcelona in roughly 52 to 56 minutes, and the station sits close enough to the centre, the port and the main beach that you need a car for none of them. That is the unusual part. In most coast towns the station is stranded on the edge of an urbanització; here it is in town, five minutes from the fish market.
By road you are on the C-32, with Mataró behind you to the south and Caldes d'Estrac and Canet de Mar ahead to the north. It is a real drive with a real toll, not a quick free hop, so most commuters settle into the train quickly and stay there.
The port is the centre of gravity. Fishing boats, the llotja where the catch is auctioned each morning, a small marina, and restaurants that fill at lunchtime with people who work at the port. Above it the old town climbs in narrow streets to the Sinera cemetery, tied to the poet Salvador Espriu, where the view runs clear along the whole coast.
There is a real high street with year-round shops, a market, schools and a health centre — the ordinary infrastructure that some beach towns on this coast quietly lack. Arenys is lived in, not just holidayed in, which is exactly why people who move here tend to stay.
Platja de la Picòrdia is the central one, right next to the port. Cavaió and La Musclera are the quieter stretches. These are family beaches, not Miami: the water is the Mediterranean, the sand is coarse, and in August the whole of the Maresme knows it.
Published asking rents for Arenys have been running around 14 €/m², so a 90 m² flat lands roughly between 1,150 and 1,400 € a month depending on the street and the state of the building. Within the town the spread is real: the urbanitzacions up the hill and the newer seafront cost more, the upper residential zones less, and a five-minute walk changes the price.
A family house with a garden and a pool is a different market again, and a thin one. There are only so many, and most change hands through people who know the owners rather than through the portals — which is the kind of thing a local agency hears about before it is ever listed.
Is winter depressing? Locals will say no: it is mild, quiet, and you get the coast back to yourself. Visitors say it is very, very quiet. Both are telling the truth.
Arenys rewards people who want a small, functioning town by the sea and are at peace with a fifty-minute train. It punishes anyone who read the word coastal and heard cosmopolitan. Come for a weekend in February as well as one in August before you decide — the two versions of this town are not the same place.
